Green Day

1995년 11월 21일, 그린 데이(Green Day)의 싱어인 빌리 조 암스트롱(Billie Joe Armstrong)이 밀워키의 콘서트에서 바지가 벗겨진(?) 혐의로 체포되었다. 그는 141달러의 벌금을 내고 풀려난다.
그린 데이(Green Day)는 '89년에 결성되었다. 친구 사이였던 빌리 조 암스트롱과 마이크 프리차드(Mike Pritchard)가 스위트 칠드런(Sweet Children)이란 밴드를 결성하고 후에 드럼의 알 소브란테(Al Sobrante)가 가세하면서 3인조가 되었고 그린 데이로 이름을 바꾸기도 햇다. 드러머 자리는 이후 존 키프메이어(John Kiffmeyer)를 거쳐 트레 쿨(Tre Cool)로 교체되었다. 유쾌함과 불순함 그리고 팝적인 멜로디로 이들은 너바나와 그런지 밴드들이 가진 우울함에서 록 팬들을 해방시켰다. 자신들의 힘으로 제작한 미니 앨범 [1,000 hours](89)은 좋은 반응을 얻었고 이를 계기로 독립 레이블 [룩아웃(Lookout)]과 계약을 맺은 이들은 같은 해에 정규 앨범 [39/Smooth]를 발표했다. 2집 [Kerplunk]('92)로 이들은 메이저 레이블의 주목을 받게 되었고 [리프라이즈(Reprise)]와 계약을 할 수 있게 된다. 곧 메이저 데뷔 앨범이자 통산 3집인 [Dookie]('94)가 발매되었다. 여기서 첫 싱글 'Longview'와 'Basket Case', 'When I Come Around' 등의 곡이 크게 히트를 하면서 이들은 [우드스탁(Woodstock)'94]에 참가하기도 했다. 또한 '94년 [그래미(Grammy)] 시상식에서 '최우수 얼터너티브 음악(Best Alternative Music Performance)' 부문을 수상하기도 한다. 통산 4집인 [Insomniac]은 '95년에 발표되었다. 앨범 차트 2위로 출발은 좋았지만 결과는 상업적으로 전작에 비해 아주 실망스러웠다. 그리고 2년이 지난 뒤 5집 [Nimrod]('97)가 발표되었다. 현악과 관악 등을 결합한 이 앨범은 그들로는 매우 실험적인 것이었다. 2000년에는 [Warning]을, 2001년에는 베스트 앨범인 [International Superhits!]를 그리고 2002년, [Shenanigans]를 발매했으면 올 해 9월 발표한 [American Idiot]은 [빌보드] 앨범 차트 1위로 등장했다.
